Situation:

Client has Outlook Internet Email Enhancement Patch (outlimep.exe from MS Website).

Client will logon to internal network, open Outlook. Outlook will use LAN connection to DSL provider and receive email from Email Hosting Provider.

By doing this, is this "bypassing" the Exchange Server completely? (Client PC local anti-virus software has been catching viruses lately.) Internet Mail is NOT configured on Exchange Server.

Yup. Outlook can speak to Exchange servers as well as Internet mail servers. So, Outlook is acting basically just as a POP3 client to the ISP. Good thing they are being caught. :)

I thought I was right. But do you think that because I am doing this, there exists a chance of me getting a virus directly into my mailbox and spreading it throughout the internal network?

If so, how can I prevent this?

Using latest virus defs you should be ok.

Make sure your virus software checks your email software and not just you files...

The only certain way of preventing this is to disconnect your computer from the Internet and the Network and never use floppy or CDs. Then you won't get a virus....

A bit panic-stricken, but sound advise. Thank you.
