Hi All,
I am building a gift card program for a local restaurant chain. People can go online and buy and/or recharge gift cards. We are doing a techinical and cost analysis of the following additions to this software.

What I am looking for is a tutorial or article on how the individual systems can bill against my web based DB in real time. Do I need to set up a dial in system and catch calls from the verifone boxes? If so, does anyone know of a tutorial about the details of doing so.

what I would really like to do is to integrate our gift card servers with their CC solution so that they will work just like the current visa, amex, etc. do. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

Sure, all they have to do is call their cc processor and ask them if they offer a gift card program or all the high-end softwares have interfaces.
If you are trying to tap in to the GC hosting market, you are going to have a custom interface for each software, or you are going to have to pick a hardware platform, like verifone, and then they will have to close checks to an offline tender, and your cards will have to go around the POS software and through the verifone boxes.

Thanks for the response. Not really getting into GC hosting, unless this goes really well maybe ;)

It's just a single client, but they have 10 restaurants.

We want them to be able to use the gift cards like a regular credit card, but it dial into our systems instead of Visa, Amex, etc.

I'm sure setting up the receiving end of the system will be a large technical effort, and was looking for any tutorials/articles ont eh subject. Also, I don't know how to go about the sending end either. Are there configs for their verifone boxes to have it dial into our servers when the card number matches a certain sequence or something like that?

RE: "We want them to be able to use the gift cards like a regular credit card, but it dial into our systems instead of Visa, Amex, etc."

As already mentioned, your best alternative would be to find a gateway that handles both credit cards and gift cards. Also, compare which gift card systems the gateway can use. Some use thrird party only. Some use their own program only. Others can support either. I would recommend the third option because depending on how well the system works for you, you may need to migrate or upgrade to support additional features or reporting capabilities.

With credit card integration as part of your criteria, I strongly recommend the use of a gateway because of all the new security rules and regs being mandated by the various card associations.

Good luck, hope this helps.
