Rebuilding sharepoint server?

I have a sharepoint 2010 server that is a mess, I need to rebuild it on a new server. The slq databases are located on a different server, and that server is fine I do not want to touch that. I am not really a sharepoint guy, I inherited this server and need to deal with it now. From what I can tell I can backup/restore from central administration, but I am running into a ton of questions. If I backup the entire farm, that will backup sql as well correct? Which is something I don't want to do since the sql server is fine. And when I build the new server, should I add it to the farm? or create a new farm? hopefully somebody can provide some insight, I realize I am in over my head but I need to get this fixed. thanks

What does your current farm structure look like now?

You have the SQL Server housing your data. What other servers do you have?

That's it, 1 front end sharepoint server, 1 sql server housing the data. It sounds like it should be easy, which is why I figured I could try to tackle it myself even though I'm not really a sharepoint expert.

Trying to find some supporting documentation.

My first thought is to add the new server to your existing farm.
Enable all the needed Services on the new server.
(Central Admin --> Manage Services on Server)
Point DNS traffic to new server.
Disable services on old server.
If everything looks good, remove the old server from the farm.
(Central Admin --> Manage servers in this farm)

Do you have any 3rd part tools or custom solutions installed on the farm?
