Working on a Health Care DB, which gets quite a bit of traffic.

Should we be rebuilding indexes at a regular interval? If so, what would that interval be? Or is rebuilding not necessary?

Help, tips and tricks gladly accepted.

Thanks

Hiya,

I can't see any need to rebuild indexes. If you run an Update Statistics and a DBCC on a regular basis, this should take care of it for you.

Yo should rebuild or defrag indexes if they become fragmented. Update stats and DBCC will not do this unless Tim was referring to DBCC DBREINDEX or DBCC INDEXDEFRAG. Use DBCC SHOWCONTIG to determine fragmentation. See the following for more info.

You can download a script from SWYNK.COM to help track table fragmentation.
