My computer reboots when I shut it down. I already unchecked automatically reboot on failure. It's still rebooting instead of shutting down. Anyone know what could be the cause?

and no error is shown?

if so then it could indicate a hardware problem, e.g. power switch malfunctioning...

to test, switch the power connector with the Reset Connector, power on and off using the reset switch, if it stops rebooting then it definitely is the power switch...

reset the BIOS to default values...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

That's right, no error is shown. What do you mean by "switch the power connector with the Reset Connector"?

He means - on the motherboard where the power switch and reset switch are connected to the pins on the motherboard, swap the pins that connect to the two switches. Thus, the power switch becomes the reset switch and the reset switch becomes the power button.

If you aren't comfortable doing this - DON'T

It would just prove that the power switch is not funky by substituting a different switch for that function.

but it is not the button that is not working. It's when I click Start-->Shut down in Windows

Yes, but if the power swith is stuck ON then it is just as if you pushed the power button right after shutdown and so the computer dutifully powers back up again.

If that is the case then you would see the BIOS stuff appear before Windows starts up.

If that is indeed happening, just hit the power bar switch at that point. That will shut the computer down for sure. If the computer boots up on its own when you turn the power bar back on then Ben was right.

What hap[pens if you boot into Safe Mode and try the Shutdown from within that?

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.
