Hello,
I have a situation here and hope someone can help me, my company has a domain in active direcotry, all workstations were given a static ip, now I want all to configure all workstations as dhcp client, since the dns was populated all clients with static ip. Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thanks

scott,
Does this work with windows 2003 server too?

Thanks

netsh will work on windows 2003.

when you turn on dhcp, make sure you set a limit on leases (like 2 weeks or a month, depending on how mobile the workforce is).

Whatever you set the lease to, make sure you set scavenging on your dns servers (assuming they are win 2k/2k3 as well). Make sure you set scavenging at the server level (server properties) and for each zone (fwd and rev zones).

When you do change it over, depending on how dns was done before, be prepared to delete old records from dns.

If yo u have any win 98 clients, you will need to adjust dhcp settings as well.

Setting dhcp leases and dns scavenging correctly will help keep you from running around fixing bum dns records.

For win 98 stuff:
(check this article for setting server-level options for dhcp and dns record updates).

Check this site for more info on scavenging:

jchoponis,
Thanks for the info. I alreday started the dhcp server, so far only a few ip leases, but in DNS there are still lots of old records, should I just delete them?

If they are no longer valid, yes.

keep in mind there are some other things you can assign in dhcp - like wins node type, dns domain name, netbios over tcp/ip settings...

My company only run WindowsXP and Mac, currently I only have dns entry... our pc's used to have static ip, now they all dhcp client, when I turn this feature on there some ip conficts, I was running around to find those pc's that are connected with static ip, but it is getting better.

Thanks

Here's a tip - turn on conflict detection in dhcp

Open dhcp mmc - go to server properties - advanced tab.

You'll see conflict detection attempts - turn it to 2 or the like.
Before handing out an address, the server will then ping that address before handing it out.

Yes, I have this done... didn't look at the advance tap before. Thanks
