Is there anyway to read a legato tape without legato ?

Yes, legato backups (For all machine types) are written to the tape in an OPEN machine format. This format is published by legato (although I don't know where) and is freely available. So theoretically, if you know the format you can read the tapes. This probably doesn't help you, as you, I guess, want some piece of software that will read legato backup tapes. I don't know of any such product, but this post may be a good start to finding what you need. Mike davison

Thanks Mike. I was looking for something like tar/dump access to Veritas tapes...which use a native format that is readable across systems.

I know Legato uses a proprietary format...the question is...if I have legato tapes, but no legato software, can I get the data ?

Based on the replies so far, my guess is that its not worth the work....any other ideas out there ?

Ask their sales for a demo version for free and then you can load up and read those tapes.

cheers,
