We just built a new 2003 file server. We setup the data disk as the E drive and put file server role only on this server. We only turned on the index service. The problem is that the share defaults to read only even when selecting admin full rights, users write and read.
Is there a way to clear the read only rights?

Are you talking about an individual folder that is shared, b/c the default with 2003 is any shared for is assigned read permissions unless they are changed.

It was supposed to be a security thing, but that just makes permissions all the more confusing. NTFS permissions are set on the resources anyway, so allow full control on the share.

Sorry I went on a semi-M$ rant. Please explain the problem with a little more detail.

We had kind of the same problem once setting up the file server. We solved it by changing permissions on the root folder properties, sharing (NOT SECURITY). Give domain users there the permission to make changes. This will allow those who have write permission (set on the security tab) to actually make changes.

In Windows 2003 the default share permission is Everyone [Read]. Thus, no matter what NTS permissions are set users will only have Read pemissions.

In Windows 2000 the default share permission is Everyone [Full Control]

As Saida correctly states you must give the Everyone group [Change] or [Full Control] share permission to solve your problem.
