Having problems with XP Pro. Last night I tried writing information to a database on a mapped network drive and it had been giving me a read only error. So checked it out on the computer the database resides on and found out the folder is set to read only...however its not a read only with a checkmark in the box, the entire box is filled in. This is applied to every folder, Ive tried removing the read only status but it keeps coming back.

Ive tried the attrib thing with no success, has anyone else stumbled across the error Im having? I just recently copied a file from that computer to a new one and now am suffering the same thing on the new one.

If your accessing it through a network, set the network account your accessing with it. You will have to adjust its account privilidges from read only to full or certain other access.

Well I was accessing teh database through the network but it had been working fine. Now all folders locally wont allow me to remove the read only access. So I cant delete or write to the files within.

Sounds like your account has been removed of administrator or right priviledges for that. My advice if you can get on the account that sets those rights and check your account priviledges out. See if they have been changed. If not then im not sure whats causing it. So I apologize if this doesnt help.

Yes it is normal and I have tried the attrib command however with no luck. These are personal computers so I have full admin access, the accounts Im logging on with our administrators.

It seems like a really annoying error, Ive read numerous threads on it but have had no luck with some of the solutions mentioned.

I bet you have to change the security rights on the offending computer on not just the folder but the database file too. you need to make sure the account you are using to access the computer is listed in both the sharing and the security tabs. this has to be done on on not just the folder but all the files in the folder that you want access to. there is the advance button you can hit to change the permissions status of the files...there are other tech's out there that can explain it better than I can

I forgot to add the "read only" error is just a symptom of the security tab access rights

I had a flakey network card that would cause all sorts of weird problems one day and work the next.I really doubt thats your issue. But, it sure doesn't hurt to try a replacement
