Read only files in Word 2000

Hi everybody,

A user has Office 2000. Her documents are all stored on network shares. When she opens a document and saves to it, the document will randomly report that it is read-only.

However, if I check the affected file(s) there are no read-only attributes (Novell or NT) set. If the user mails the file to another user the file shows no read-only tendancies.

Her O/S is W2k SP3. The network is mainly Novell for file and print and the user's PC has the 4.83 Novell client installed.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!

I'd got similar experience as well, but our users are using W2K SP2 and Office XP.

I just wonder if that is related to the network share since we had tried saving the files to local hard drive and the problem does not occur.

Still waiting for any ideas on solving this problem. As an interim solution, we just ask the users to open the document in Word (File, Open).

By the way, what brand of PC are you using? We are currently using Dell and I'm not sure if that will be brand or model related.

We are using Windows NT environment.

I have a client with the exact same issue! ...and both of the PC's involved are new Dell desktops...w/ WinXP and Office XP.

Guys,

We're using Dell PCs but I'm certain that the problem's not make related (only one Dell out of hundreds is affected).

What network are you guys using? We've got Novell for file and print. I've tried the latest client and its service pack but no joy.

The latest idea is to reinstall Office - or at least apply the service packs - but I don't think this is the issue. Other than that I'm stumped so any ideas gratefully received!

The server is running Windows 2k Small Business Server that had SP3 but not all the updates until last Thursday--it is now and of course was rebooted....I have not heard from the client since then so I won't know until today if there was any improvement. The server also runs Exchange, provides DHCP and DNS, and the SQL Server-based Church Mgmt software. No other abnormal conditions are being reported!!

Antivirus solution is Symantec "Norton Antivirus Corp. Edition v 7.6" on both clients and server.

Network connectivity is provided by 2 Netgear switches in a TCP/IP only environment. I've checked connectivity and even changed one desktops connection to the other switch.

I also am doing a "little testing" with the 2 offending machines--one is completely up-to-date w/ O/S and Office XP patches and the other hasn't been touched since the machine was originally installed--WinXP w/ SP1. We also installed another new Dell on Thursday, so I will see how it does....

Signed,
Also Stumped

Hi Jeiband, how's your testing? Have you got any final results? We are still facing the problem but temporarily we suggest using opening the documents via Word instead of double-clicking and opening in Windows Explorer.

I checked with the client the end of last week and either she's too flustered/given up to notice...or a change I made may have worked.....As I mentioned both client and server were running NAVCE 7.6. I adjusted the realtime scan to scan only at file creation--not every little touch of the file, and that SEEMS to have helped (there were some old tech articles discussing this---but is was supposed to be older versions). Now that does not explain why only 2 workstations out of the 30-40 at the site were having the problem!!! (Maybe they were the heaviest users of MS Word???)

Anyway, is there anything similar in your environment that might be along the same lines?

Thanks Smah and Jeiband, I would further investigate and see if the suggestion from Smah can help resolving the problem.

Well I can confirm that Dell is not the problem, I've 5 compaq Evo E-PC Series and they al have the same problem.

Opening a file form a network share and receive the message that the file is in use bij antoher person or is opened read only or do you want to go back the the previously saved file ...

I'm still trying to get is solved ...

Regards
