I am trying to save a ms word file and it always tell me that the file is read only. But I have look at the read only attribute and the box is unchecked, so what's going on?
How to solve that?

Is it opened 2 times or somewhere else? Is the file on another machine such as a server?

the file is on the server but only that user has access to it and the file is not open anywhere but on this computer

Has the user got the correct permissions to the folder? (eg, if only write and not modify...)

I'm getting this EXACT problem... Please help us. Its causing much frustration!

User has full access to the share too? (or owning folder that is shared).

Is it something like this that you have run up against?

176313 - WD: Troubleshooting Guide: File Locking in Master Documents

255908 - WD2000: Part 1: General Information About Master Documents

WD2000: Part 2: General Information About Master Documents

I am having the very same problem, does anyone have a solution?

Another detail I notice is that if I close the document and reopen it, it's ok.

So the first time is always read-only and when I close it and reopen, I get full access.

On the server, Right Click on "My Computer" and select "Manage". Click on the "Shared Folders" to expand and click "Open Files" This will provide you a list of what files are open and who is accessing it. I have a problem where when the user closes out of a file, it would not register on the server, so I would have to manually close out of the file from the server side. The user was running Windows XP and the server is running W2K. This issues occured offen with XP users accessing files on the W2K server.

ArchonSoft: How have you gone with this read-only problem on WinXP pcs? I am having the same problem on my network.

Cheers

I deleted the file and create it again as administrator, all seems to be ok until now

This read only prob happens with all WinXP users on the network and with all different files (Word, Excel etc) and it seems very intermittent. So it's really hard to delete every file and recreate it as administrator (over the WAN). The Microsoft Read Only Fix that they sent me only reduced the occurrence of the problem but didn't completely fix it.

Did you try this on each XP machine that's having the problem?

1.In Windows Explorer, open the network folder that contains the file that you are trying to open or save.
2.On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3.Click Use Windows classic folders, and then click OK.

I know the fix is supposed to eliminate doing this, but it might be worth it to try out the manual fix.

yeah i've run the fix on all xp pcs. i have already made sure that each network drive (and folders beneath) are set to use windows classic folders. maybe service pack 2 will fix these little problems up.

Hi i've got the same problem here except my server is a Novell 6 server. Anyone fix completly this problem??? What is the fix that Microsoft gave? Where can i download it ? Thanks for your help guys
