read from url

Does anyone know how I can read some data from a url into a variable in javascript without opening any apparent windows?

What do you mean by data from a URL... data contained within the URL string itself like: [tt]somepage.php?myvar=somevalue[/tt]?

What I mean is, if I have a url such as

http://localhost/returndata.cgi?param=XYZ,

and I want to read the output from calling thi url into a variable without opening any windows.
is this doable?
