read FAT/NTFS, write directly to hard disk

hi - ok, not a hacking query although I admit it sounds like it.

Seem to recall an API that would allow you to pull HD location of file from FAT. Anyone know the api that will do this in NTFS/XP?


Also, api that used allow me to write directly to HD in 98x days - anything similar in XP?

Heh, this must be the only function in the win32 API which actually does anything :)
It's certainly the one which I quote most often.

If you're admin on an XP machine, you can use this to open a handle to the physical disk and do whatever you want.

As for making sense of the file system when you're there, I'd go a google'ing.
