Well, people, it just got worse. Now my CD-ROM door won't even open. The BIOS is detecting it, so Windows detects it, and that means it's getting power, so it's not a power problem. It acts as though something is loose (a gear wheel or something) or stuck (a gear wheel or something) cos when I push the eject button the light starts blinking as though it opened and closed and Icouldn't see it. I'm afraid to open it because I know nothing about CD drives of any kind. <br><br>HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well if it's getting that bad, I might sugest taking it into service, if it's a simple 32X or slower CDrom, I'd recomend going out and buying a new one, a DVD-Rom perhaps (my 5XDVD/32XCdrom hasnt failed me yet) <p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.com>kb244@kb244.com</a><br><a href= </a><br>Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)<br>

Buy a new one. You may see a small hole on the front. With power off, use a straightened gem clip into the hole to release the tray and get your media out. <p>Ed Fair<br><a href=mailto: efair@atlnet.com> efair@atlnet.com</a><br><a href= > </a><br>Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. <br>

It's a 48X, and I'm not sure if there is something stuck in it or not. It just got that bad. I went out, got back and BAM!. What's a nicely priced CDROM? Maybe I should buy a new one.

If you are going to scrap the old cdrom and buy a new one, you may as well take it apart and see if there is anything that you can fix. <p>Troy Williams B.Eng.<br><a href=mailto:fenris@hotmail.com>fenris@hotmail.com</a><br><a href= > </a><br>

Definitely take that old drive and make it a doorstop (after you extract any disk inside). Fixing the old drive mech just isn't worth the effort, and could even damage one of your disks later on.<br><br>John M.

I agree with Tekkey1...get your media out, and put in a new drive. They are cheap, about a buck per x of rotation speed (50x=$50) approximately on the low end. And you dont want to cause more problems by feeding this thing more of your cd-media.

First... Check how you install the CD ROM DRIVE to the casing and see to it that all sides are of the same level or degree from the base or the one above. This applies also when having a problem opening and closing the CD ROM Drive.

Second.. Try to re-boot using a start-up disk from WIN'98 because it supprts CD-ROM DRIVE then follow the following from:
(1) From A:\type FDISK /STATUS you will view the Hard
Drives & Letters Assigned.
(2) then A:\type the last letter found at(1)to proceed and
go to d:\ (WHERE C:\ is the last drive at process(1).
(2a) put a WIN98OEMSE CD at Drive E:\ wherein D:\ RAM DRIVE
then E:\ CD ROM DRIVE.

(3) from D:\ type edit then press alt tab from the
Keyboard...then go to E:\ CD ROM DRIVE then win98
OEMSE ...PRESS &quot;ENTER&quot;.
(You will now see th e set-up cab files of win98OEMSE,
then press &quot;Esc-tab&quot;.)
(3a) Press Alt-tab then Close.

(4) from D:\ type E:\ You are now inside WIN98OEMSE

(5) At E:\WIN98OEMSE\type setup then press &quot;ENTER&quot; setup will cont.

After these procedures and cleaning you've done to your CDROM DRIVE. AND ,the worst still not working well!!! BUY A NEW ONE. If it worked then do a maintenance cleaning to your CD-ROM DRIVE.

IT'S A LONG PROCESS BUT YOU'LL LEARN IT FROM LETTER A TO Z + NUMBERS 1 TO 100 (THIS IS JUST A FIGURE OF SPEECH.).

Thanks a lot guys, for all your help. A new drive is definitely in order. And thanks for installation tips, compumedic.

I find that kicking my machine generally works to fix most problems. Be carefull not to kick in the monitor, though, especially when it's on because that could give you a nasty shock. Also, if using your cd drive as a cup holder can damage it badly, so make sure you don't do that with your new one.

When I mentioned taking your old cd-rom apart, that was not with the intention of fixing it but salvaging parts to make small robots with :) There are alot of parts in a cdrom that can be used, the same applies for floppy drives and walkmans.

Well, guys, my brother has done it again, but a good way this time. He went ahead and opened the CDROM up and fixed it! He said that something was one-sided and it works fine now, but it still makes that weird jet engine sound. I still wanna buy a burner though. Recomendations anyone?
