Re-installing of windows 98

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me out here, I have been having problems with USB ports, probelm as in the drivers, The 'USB root hub' shows the yellow exclamation mark and when i look at the poperties it tells me that the NTkern.vxd device loader could not load the device driver, I have also previously been having windows crashes with regards to this file.

So i thought that i would start with re-insatlling windows 98 SE, but as i start going through the installation wizard , it then tell me that it can not update it becuase iam trying to install an older version. ???? Iam sure i installed SE first time!!

Please could you assist me on this one yours gratefully

It sounds like you did and now your using a WIn98 FE CD to reinstall so it is coming up with that error. On the right hand side of the CD there is a little date code. For Win98 FE I think it is 0598 and for Win98SE I think it is 1298 check the date code on the CD your trying to install.

If you go to a command prompt I.e. in windows start shut down restart in ms dos mode
c:>windows>
then rename win.com win.old
c:>windows>ren win.com win.old (then press enter)
put your boot disk in and reboot system when asked what directory you want to install in make sure that it is C:\WINDOWS
it might put windows.000 or such if this is the case just delete everything after the 's' and carry on installation as normal.
I have carried these instructions and it has worked for me.

Is your USB port enable in the BIOS?
Reinstalling windows wont help if USB is disable in the BIOS.
Make sure USB is ENABLE in the BIOS.
