My computer is displaying
"Cannot find WIN.COM Cannot continue to load Windows."
when switched on. I have run Scanreg and scan disk and they have now fixed all problems known but message is still appearing. I cannot even access safe mode, only a commmand prompt.
I don't mind reformatting/re-installing Windows becasue the Hard drive is empty, but I don't have any of the original hardware install driver disks. (ie Modem, sound, moniter, mouse, keyboard, graphics?, motherboard?)
So what is my best option? Can I re-install without deleteing installed drivers?
Help would be highly appreiated.
Thanks

You should be able to rename the win.ini file in the c:\windows folder, and install windows 98 over c:\windows. It won't delete everything, just overwrite. And there's a good chance if you tell your system to search for the files, that it will find it on your system. If not, point the PnP driver search to your c:\windows, c:\windows\system\, and c:\windows\system32 folders.

When you say that your hard drive is empty - did you format it?

You can reinstall Win98 with the drivers that are available on the Win98 CD. This should get you up and running and then you can download the updated drivers off the Internet.

Hard drive has no important files on, thats what I meant by empty.
Could you give me a step by step to what you are saying.
Thanks for the help so far!

Try this .

Put your boot disk with cd support in & start your comp .

At the prompt , type in whatever your rom drive letter is & press Enter .

Type setup & press Enter .

If that dos'nt work , give us all the info on your 98 install disk . Version , upgrade , update etc .

If you do get it working & you still want to format , let us know .

You need to boot from a stiffy with CD drive support.
On the windows 98 CD go to tools directory and choose sysrec directory and then run pcrestor. This restores the windows while you sit back and watch. When its finished it will ask you to use your backup disks for other programs. If you do not have any choose cancel and when it asks if you want to get this reminder at next boot up say no.

Hope this helps
