I have a Meridian PBX that I connect to from my desk using a Putty connection software through a terminal server where we have a port configured for the PBX. The problem that I'm having is that I keep loosing connection to the PBX and our third level support had to change the connection from Port 0 to Port 1, and he mentioned that the port was disabled. What would cause this to happen and how would I log into the PBX to correct this myself?

Port 0 is the Master TTY Port, there are somethings you can only do From TTY 0.

You can use any TTY Port to goto LD 37 and do a STAT, that will show you the status of each TTY Port. If one is DSLB you can enable it by do ENL TTY X X= the TTY Port number.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

I would first verify your network connection that Putty uses.

You may be broadcasting to the TTY port and the NORTEL switch doesn't like that, it leeds to be on it's own LAN.
