hello
doing a test nt4 to 03 migration
when i install a 2nd DC and install DNS on it, do i need to create a primary zone or secondary zone (creates copy of a zone that exists on another server)
i already have my first DC with DNS for internal lan
thank you

Create a secondary zone.

Quote from Windows help file.

Primary zone
Select the primary zone option if this is a new zone. If this DNS server is installed on an Active Directory domain controller, then the Active Directory–integrated zone option is available in this wizard.

Secondary zone
Select this option if this is a copy of a zone that is hosted on a different DNS server. A secondary zone offers redundancy for the zones in a network. If you have zones hosted on DNS servers in your network or Internet Service Provider (ISP), you may want to add a secondary zone for one of them on this DNS server

I don't know sir...I guess its broke.

thx for your response
i have done so. If i now have 2 DC's and my 2nd DC is running this secondary zone, what happens to DNS when i demote my first server (which is really a temporary DC in my situation)?

Will DNS fuction correctly for the domain if i just go ahead and point the 2nd server DNS settings to itself instead of to the first server?

It should work fine as long as you remove all DNS entries pointing your going to remove i.e. DHCP, DNS, IP Configuration etc. Make sure you transefer Operations master, global catalog, DHCP, etc to the other server before you demote.

Check/update DNS records SOA
