RAS speed problems

Have just installed the RAS services (Click click click) nice and easy.
The connection speed is only 33 blips.. Have already put some speed on my side but still can't get a higher connection speed.
Here in the land of Oz we have a decent phone network and , from memory, I've seen the connection speed higher to an ISP higher then that..
It seems to me that it's the speed of the modem from the server.
Both modems are V90
Anyone have any ideas?

Just to add to the thread..
One computer has a Lucent Technologies Soft Modem AMR from a I series laptop (IBM) and the other a IBM V90 (IBM Server).
The help file in RAS states that if the two modems are in compatable then they will fall back to a slower speed of communication.. Odd as there both IBM's products..
Will try a test tomorrow by taking out the other IBM V90 moden and trying it on a desktop machine..
If anyone has any ideas on the subject that vary from mine why not post it on..

If you are using an ISDN line and analogous modems connected to a a/d converter the speed will never go over 33600 even if your modem could go faster. If you are using ISDN lines I would recommend using true ISDN devices instead.

hello, I have a similar problem but in my case I have two 56k modems and the speed at which they keep connecting is 14000bps. is there a default setting anywhere that I should change ar is it just the limitations of the phone lines?

Hi, I could be completely off here, but isn't the max upload speed of a 56k modem around 33k?

If it is that would explain something.

It should be the line.

I have a laptop that connects as high as 54kbps here at the office but when using at home the highest is 26kbps..

Maybe Im wrong, but you should try another machine with a modem on the same line... and if you get a different reading, I am wrong...

Something bizare to add to this one.
Was speaking to our telco team who where working with a PCMCIA card that connects as if it is a voice phone call. They did not have all the info as they had just taken it out of the box. From what I could understand was that when you dial out on your regular modem it announces to the local exchange that it is establishing a connection as a data call.

to hads and everyone interested, thanks for your replies. well, after I posted the message I dialled in from another machine which was close by and the connection speed was 28k so it must be the lines. the 14000 connection was from one of our branch offices which is in an area with very problematic phone lines.
but what bugs me is, when two modems start the hand-shake, they start at the highest possible speed and then work downwards until they get a stable transmission. but in this case there were only two trials which means they already started at a low speed and didn't have to repeat too many steps down to 14000. does anyone have an idea about this?
