I have a server running Suse Enterprise Server 10.2 which backs up 10 other linux web servers once a month. Recently, I've been noticing that the server displays a clean desktop instead of having windows open on it. This tells me that the server rebooted, but I have not done it.

Can anyone tell me what log file or where to start to see why this server is rebooting. I suspect that a disk is going bad and that is possibly causing it? I don't think it is heat related since it is relatively cool right now compared to other times when I've been running (also the AC is on at 74 degrees).

Logs can be found here: /var/log directory

also take a look at: /var/log/dmesg - This log file is written upon system boot. It contains messages from the kernel that were raised during the boot process.

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

run "last"

this will show you whos logged in, reboots/crashes etc

There were alot of errors in /var/log/messages, so I disabled the web server since I wasn't using it anyways and it seems to be fine now. We'll see...

Thanks for the help.
