Random problem with my DVD-RW Drive

Just wondering if somebody could help me.

I've come back to my computer from being away for a few days with my DVD-RW Drive not opening. I press the eject button and it just doesn't respond. I've tried everything I could think of, manually ejecting by right-clicking the drive in My Computer, opening up my computer, pulling out the wires, giving em a blow and plugging it back in, re-installing the DVD drive. But it hasn't worked.

The DVD drive light flickers when the computer is starting up, but when I get to the Windows XP load up screen it turns ouff, also if I press eject while the light is on while the computer is booting up the light just turns off and the drive doesn't respond.

Just wondering if there's anything i can do, or is my DVD drive well and truely knackered? (It's not even over a year old). This is all very random, as my computer worked perfectly before I left....

Any help would be much appreciated.

Might want to try the drive in another PC to be sure. It could have something to do with the IDE cable or failing power supply, you never know. That's why moving it temporarily to another PC helps rule that out.

Install it in another system, and if the same problem happens, then the drive is probably bad.
If it works ok there, then reinstall it in your system, try a different known working IDE cable, and connect a different power lead to it.

I had this many moons ago drive worked fine but couldnt open it unless done manually with paper clip through hole in front. gets so annoying finding paper clips u will buy a new drive.

Ok tried forcing open, didn't work out to well. Managed to get my DVD out, but now cant close the DVD-Rom! God dammit!!!! I havn't got any money for a new DVD-RW!!! Any ideaS???

Sorry to hear that. However, you should consider contacting either the manufacturer of the drive, or the vendor from which you purchased it. Perhaps it is still covered under warranty.

If not, it's a loss you're likely facing at this point. A problem physically, of course, is a hardware issue. With DVD-RW drives being as cheap as $50 or less for a decent brand online ( the hit shouldn't be all that bad.
