random crashes on reformatted pc

i have a pc that is about 18 months old (specs as folows)

cpu: intel core 2 duo e6400 @ 2.13ghz
ram: 2x1gb corsair ddr2 667
mobo: evga 680i sli
gfx: gainward 7900gs 256mb
hdd: western digital 36gb raptor

everything was fine until i dowlouded a windows update last week and it refused to reboot!!

i decided to reformat and start again, i assumed that it was one of the updates that messed it up. I installed all the latest drivers etc. and some games and all the files i had backed up...

but it keeps crashing now!!!

it locks up and loops any sound that was playing at the time.

does anyone have any idea what i can do?
could it be hardware related?

all the temps in the pc that i can measure are below 45c so i dont think its overheating..

Sounds like it could be a driver issue. Try starting it in Safe Mode with Networking (F8 during boot) and see if it reboots during use. You should have it set to not reboot after system error, right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Settings, un-tick "Automatically Restart".

Run MEMTEST86 on the RAM. You could also try removing one piece of RAM at a time, and see if that makes any difference.

Check out the hard disk for bad blocks - run CHKDSK /R

sounds like a driver to me as well, might be work stripping all the extras from your mobo- unplug any pci cards/disable anything you dont need to boot with etc and see if you can narrow it down to what part is causing the problem

i tried in safe mode and it still froze...

but then i tried removing one of the ram modules and now it is fine!!!
