My g/f's Dell laptop is having an issue. It is getting random BSOD's. She has installed no new hardware or software recently. It just gradually got worse and worse. The machine starts to freeze up and you hear it working, then whammo...BSOD.

Ok...I got another one so I can put some of the info here...

KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Then there are 2 paragraphs about checking any new hardware or software and that it is installed properly. Then Technical Info:
win32k.sys Address...blah blah some numbers and letters

Then physical dump of memory

It seems like either a emory issue or a hard drive issue?

Any help is welcome!

I'd say that it's related to memory or overheating.

(Btw,when it comes to troubleshooting "blah blah some numbers and letters" isn't quite helpful, you know!
"Numbers and letters" many times actually mean something important...)

I'd definitely check the temperature (should be in the bios settings at least - and something like lavalys Everest will pick it up in windows too, normally) - and if high, reply the cpu fan.

I'd also run spyware and virus checks. And chkdsk.

If none of that solves the problem, I'd be inclined to think hardware going bad - could be anything, need to eliminate as many possible culprits as possible.

hmmm...ok...I will boot it up and type out the exat numbers....

sorry about the blah balh blah part....it ws early in the AM....didn't feel like typing it all out :)

The BSOD says:

*** STOP: 0X000000F4(0X00000003,0X87289740,0X872898B4,0X805F9F88)

This one was a lot shorter, less info.

The chkdsk ran ok it seems.

Buy some compressed air, and shoot it into all opening in the case. You could have accumulated some dust. My laptop fan was running continuously, and when I did this, it shut off for most of the time (or went to low speed) except for a few seconds now and then.

I'd say processor has come loose or faulty motherboard ( condensator leaking )
