Hey, I have a ECS P4S5A P4 Socket 478 400MHz FSB 5PCI/1AGP/1AMR mother board and I'm looking to put more RAM into it.

Specs:
Controller Type: Floppy Controller, Ultra DMA 100, Ultra DMA 33, Ultra DMA 66
Processor Socket: Intel® Socket 478
System Board Style: ATX
Video Bus: AGP 4X
Bus Speed: 400 MHz
Max System Memory: 2 GB
Memory Technology: DDR-SDRAM (DDRRAM), SDRAM
Number of AGP Slots: 1
Number of AMR Slots: 1
Number of PCI Slots: 5
Maximum Number of Processors: 1
Processor Class: Intel Pentium 4
System Chipset: SiS645 & SiS961

I currently have SDRAM - 256mb - and I'm trying to put in a SDRAM - 128mb - but when I do the system won't even boot. I'm not really sure as to what the problem is.

Can visit for more specification information...
Thanks

For sure that mobo should support the extra RAM, I would suggest that the new RAM is incompatible with either the Mobo or the RAM already installed, this is not infrequent particularly if you are using unbranded RAM. Try the new stick on its own to check this. Of course it could also be faulty. Try it in another system if you can to make sure it is OK. If it proves to be incompatible with your Mobo all you can do is get another stick that will work, maybe the same as the one already fitted. Hey, I went and checked it out... I had PC-133r SD-RAM. I was unsure of what the "r" stood for so I went and looked it up. What I got was that it was a different type of RAM called Registered RAM, but I'm not really all that sure. The resolution from what I gained was that it was an incompatible chip. Supposively, that type of RAM is used for server-based motherboards and has to support it.

Another thing, if the RAM was faulty wouldn't POST just not recognize it was there and bypass it reading only the other 256 SDRAM chip in there?

I think I'm going to order a 512 PC-133 SD-RAM chip off of TigerDirect.com seems like the best deal. Do you know of any sites where you can get components cheap?

Thanks for the reply...

Sometimes it will be bypassed but it can also cause a boot failure. I know several good sites for hardware but they are in Australia, that any good to you?
