RAM identification

I have recently passed the Cisco IT Essentials course and about to sit the A+ exams after which i'm considering starting my own part time PC servicing business.

So my question is this, can anyone tell me what the best way to identify the type of RAM installed in a PC.

At the moment i suppose the way i would identify the type of RAM is by the system documentation, but these aren't always going to be available. I know most MOBO manufacturers have downloadable MOBO manuals from there website but in a field repair situation this isn't always practical, also they would only list the types that could be installed and not what is actually installed!!!
Also can different RAM be mixed, i.e speed, type (DDR, SDRAM), SIMMS and DIMMS?

Sorry about the long winded post. If anyone who does this stuff for a living can give any tips it would be much appreciated.

If you are going to start your own business the best thing you could do is get some books that will give you the information you are looking for. You need to be comfortable with this stuff and the info we can give you could help you on the specific questions you are asking but you need to have a general knowledge of computers to work with them. Get books, study, study, STUDY!

I have more books than I have room for!! I have recently recently bought some of Bigelows pocket series which give good advice. I have also done quite a few PC repairs for friends and colleages, so most stuff i'm pretty up together with. Execept RAM!!.

Just wondering is there any easy way on identifying RAM type, speed.
