I Know it can be done on old macs, where the OS is copied into the ram, then booted from there. However, Is there a way to do it on a PC? I have 512mb ram, and I don't think XP would use all of it...

Any one know where I could get a program? or how to do it?

I dunno of any specific way to do this but your problem would be making sure that the computer does not shut off. If it does then you will loose it all. I would not mess with it!

The old Macs saved the current settings to the Hard drive, before shutting down. I know, a powerloss? Well, The only things I would lose, would be my current icon placement, or anything else I'd changed that has something to do with the windows OS. That could be solved by making a certain button combo which would deflash the memory to the disk. If the power goes out right now, the only thing I lose is the document I'm working on, or anything else in RAM. The above mentioned way would COPY the OS, to the ram, and then boot. There would always be a copy of the OS on the Hard Disk.

So, I wonder why one hasn't been made for a PC?

They use to make Tandy computers that booted off of a ROM chip or had the operating system in memory. I think maybe that is possible. This is very hardware specific. There is no reason it wouldn't work. The computer reads the BIOS/CMOS off a EPROM chip (Spell), but it uses a battery to keep it active. Even Word can constantly write your documents or file in case you have an unexpected fatal error or illegal operation.

You could use something like a smartmedia card if it could be read off an internal USB or smartmedia reader before the operating system loaded. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
