Right, I brought a new HD, Maxtor 60gb 7200 ATA133. I set it as master and installed win xp pro. now when I boot up it gets to the desktop and then the task bar locks up. I can move the mouse only for a while then the whole comp jams up, then I cant do nothing at all, I had to reset comp and let it boot again, now the hd makes strange noises, Like its trying to read it then locking up, I get back to desktop and it dose the same thing, makes a funny noise then just locks up and my comp is jammed again. I tryed reinstalling xp 2 times and it dose the same thing. So what I did was put my old hd back, 20gb western digital ata66, That runs fine on Raid. I set the Maxtor to master on IDE. Went to the Maxtor website and downloaded the diagnostic tool. Put it onto floppy and rebooted. started it back up and run the diagnostic tool. done all the test on the Maxtor and it was all fine. So I couldn't work out what was wrong. I unpluged my 20gb hd and just booted up my Maxtor on IDE. installed xp on it again. And it was running fine, didn't seem to have any probs. I put the hd back on Raid and booted up and it did exactly the same as before, jammed up. Then I put maxtor the drive back onto IDE and tryed to boot and this time it did the same as it did on raid. I have no clue how to get around this, if there is anyone that can help, that would be great.

Specs: MSI KT333 ultra aru. xp athlon 2200, 768ddr.

You say your using RAID, are you using 2 drives of each then for stripping ?

I'm only using the maxtor on raid and noting else.

I'm all new to this raid stuff, all I no is that it come built into the board. right this is what I have.

primary disk is set to: Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAIDO SCSI Disk Device

SCSI and RAID Controllers: winXP Promise MBFastTrak133 Lite (tm) Controller.

I have the floppy that I installed the raid off and it says. ATA133 RAID Driver Version: 2.00.0 Build 21. G72-RDFT101.

If you need anymore info just let me no. thanks.

Ok, I am going to assume here that you are using the 1 Hard Drive and not RAID but normal IDE, although your board is RAID capable.

have you downloaded any new drivers etc etc :

is a good spot.

Since you cant get in far enough to install them normally, can you get in using safe mode ?

if you are using a raid array then you must have two of the same disks, if not then it will default the larger drive to the size of the small one (sometimes), if dont build a raid array, then you dont need the drivers because the raid controller will act as a normal ide channel. if you want raid 0, or striping, then get two of the same drives. so two 30 gb drives and it will total 60 gb, if not, put your hd that you will boot off of on the primary ide channel, and set it to master, and use the raid controller like an ide controller.

so put your maxtor on your primary ide controller and dont worry about the raid right now,

later you can change your jumpers for that to make them ide only, but make sure you change your boot sequence to hdd or c: first, or a: whichever you prefer

I have the same controller on my asus a7v333, i have 2 hdd in raid striping and never had any problem with it and winxp. I heard that it is a good ideea to use the plug at the end of the ata66 cord in the hdd if it is master and not the one in the middle because there could be some interference from the reflected signals. Another thing I know is that many raid controllers aren't very compatible with the mainboard chipset. So you could try to disable completly the ide 0 (first ide) from bios and only use the second ide (ide 1). You should also check for loose connections and newer drivers. Check for windows updates on microsoft's site also as there are an incredible number of win xp patches for an incredible number of bugs in winxp. You could try to use win2000 which is more stable and also try another motherboard of the same model or a diffrent one and see what the hdd has to say.

If you have questions let me know.

dont use RAID unless you need it or know what you are doing...there is no real advantage to using it....If RAID will really help you in you computing then you would already know how to set it up.....

NOTE: Just cuz you have an option DOESN'T MEAN you have to use it.... [soapbox]

Okay, first of all, The MSI KT333 ultra motherboard has 4IDE connectors, the 2 at the right hand corner are ur Raid onboard adapters. Since you r only using 1 hard drive, u better stay away from the raid.

After you make sure u connect ur harddrive in IDE1 slot, get into the bio and set it to ata/133.

(u might want check the harddrive's jumper settings as well, just for the safe side of it. but i don't see a problem since u were able to boot)

if you decide to mess around w/ ur computer even further, i recommend you that download the user mannual of this mother board(it should be your Bible).

by the way, to Mr. Deecee:
if you have a raid0 configuration, it will easily boost ur harddrive platform performance at leat 80-90%. since ur data rate gose from ata133 to ata2x133(266) now. WOW, huh?

i need the disk ata133 raid driver can you sent me the disk plzzz

Benchmarks of RAID 0 motherboard solutions show that the increase in data transfer rates is less then 50% over a regular drive setup. That's with benchmark software that specifically tests drive speed. In a 'real world' situation, the speed gain from a RAID 0 array is only going to be noticed those times when you're transferring a large amount of data in a short period of time. If you do A/V editing or work with large database files, RAID 0 might be worth it. Otherwise, the negligible speed increase probably doesn't justify the aggravation of setting it up and the increased risk to your data.

I try not to let my ignorance prevent me from offering a strong opinion.

I can confirm what BaudKarma says. RAID0 is a great deal of use when doing video processing or other high disk activity stuff. Otherwise it more trouble than its worth! RAID 1 (mirroring) is very useful however as a precaution agains total drive failure.

I too use a promise RAID setup. What sunneh has, is a RAID controller - but it appears it's RAID capabilities are not being used.

Recently I had similar problems - especially the 'Irq less than or not equal' issue. Very soon afterwards one of the disks failed!

So, despite passing diagnostics I would suspect hard drive issues. But I would not discount memory issues either. So I would recommend running SpinRite ( on the drive and memtest86 on the RAM.
