Hi all,

I want to change my IBM SAN storage configuration. Actually the SAN storage contain SureStore disk mirrored in RAID 1 and each size is 146GB. Is it possible to change this configuration in RAID 5 if there is a data in the disk?

Regards

I think you'd probably need to save the data, reconfigure the SAN and then restore.

I want to be good, is that not enough?

My SAN stores the oracle datafiles and used to starting up the database and I don't have any space to save the data.May I loose the data if i reconfigure only the SAN without saving the data anywhere.

I would have thought it would be dangerous to do an online switch (even if it is possible) involving Oracle since the latter depends so much on consistency. Don't you have a tape drive or other backup media you could use to save the data to? If not, what're your recovery options in the event of a failure?

First: I know nothing about HP storage.

Second: The following link suggests it may be possible.

Disclaimer:
Check with HP before you try it.
I'd also suggest you check with Oracle too.
As Ken says, Oracle is VERY fussy about its storage, so if both HP and Oracle say go ahead, get them to properly check you entire environment, software and firmware levels, etc. then back it all up, twice, before you try it.

"All of the hardware options have options for the RAID level, whether it is full mirroring RAID1, or striping RAID5. The Autoraid can even switch back and forth dynamically."

Don't forget to touch wood (must be living wood not some old desk or chair). Oh and cross the first two fingers on your right hand as you press the go button. Good luck.

Interesting, Duke, thanks for that and a star for the research. However, I think I'd still use the old belt and braces approach!
