I have a system failure (motherboard) and would like to try to restore the data from my raid arrayed hard drives. Is it possible to put the hard drives on another motherboard that is not the same as the original motherboard? Is there any software available that could be used to reconstruct the array? The hard disk drives are fine. Do I need to another of the same original motherboard?

Thanks in advance.

Gordon

Was it a hardware or software array? If it was a hardware array that was built into the mobo, then I would recommend getting the same model mobo and you'll be good to go.

If it's a software raid then you should be able to hook thos 2 drives up to another PC and get it fully functional, unless you run into one of XP's being flaky about being on new hardware, and then hopefully you can at least get the data off the raid that you need.

However if you are using a raid 0 as stated you should be vigilant with your backups because you have doubled your chances of data loss with a striped array.

Thanks for the reply Sean. I am going to have to check the specs on the motherboard as to whether it was hardware or software. I do know it was MBfasttraclite.

Failing all else getdataback has worked for me in the past. You will need a spare drive at least the capacity of the two you have together to recover the data to, plus a small drive you can put an XP system on.

If you can build the same system, same manufacturers - albeit updated - you should get away with it though. It might be best to attempt to mount those drives as slaves at least initially.

Still at least you had them as RAID 0 - so there is software like getdataback to recover them. If you had used a JBOD array then I know of no way to get the data off on different hardware - or if one disk goes down! (But then you can't recover anything from a RAID 0 either if one disk dies.

Thanks Stduc,

I did find out that the mobo has a built in Promise RAID controller, so it looks like get another mobo or lose all my data and reinstall everything. The mobo is an Asus A7V133 - nice in it's day. I did find two used ones for $1.00 on E-bay. So, looks like that's it!
