radeon 9200 and strange sound problems.

Okay, since i've been trying to get a solution to this for almost a month now i've got this pretty much down to a copy/paste affair.

my radeon 9200 PCI card is causing sound artifacts whenever i play a video that is connected to sound: ebaums clips, music videos and games, but not flash or java games. Turning off directdraw in dxdiag stops any problems, but direct3d doesnt. Going to Troubleshooting under the advanced menu of monitor settings and turning it down till directdraw and direct3d are turned off also stops the sound artifacts. Strangely, pure sound files do not have any artifacts.

I've tried updating my catalyst drivers and changing refresh rate to no avail, and i have no clue how to update my sound card drivers as all it sais is "creative sb live! series".

D/L the free utility from the following link to determine which exact SB Live card is in your system:

If new sound card drivers do not help, then d/l the latest DirectX version.

Seems to me you can use that "series" drivers. Or, just print the numbers on your sound card here and we can find the drivers for you. Does it say something like CT-.....
on the sound card, or is the sound built in? If built in what are the numbers on the built in chip?

I'll try the sound drivers, i have dx 9.0c and it won't let me reinstall/repair, and god only knows what i might screw up taking the card out.

Slight update: just updated my sound card drivers and deleted a BUNCH of old unused display adapters. Going to try moving the vidcard to the first PCI slot and see if that helps any. moving the soundcard to the third did wonders for sound quality (crazy as that sounds), maybe this will work.

And turns out that accomplished about as much as microsoft's IE updates. I'm at a loss, nobody else i've talked to has a clue as to why this is happening. if this keeps up i'm going to see if i can get a replacement card from ATI.

PCI uses some different signals for each slot. Changing the PCI slot forces the system to reassign different Interrupt lines, and some associated driver values. So it may be that there was a hardware interrupt line conflict with another device in your system, or that a setting chenged when the system found the card at a different place.

Well so far the sound problems haven't abated despite numerous arrangements and driver updates. What worries me more than those, though, is the way i get 100+fps with nobody around but it sharply drops into the 20's and 10's the moment any action starts.

a 9200, even a PCI one, should be able to handle half-life better than that.

Well it's almost 5 years old and been running pretty much constantly. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just falling apart inside.

Would at least explain how my ram went from 512 to 480.

Well, anything that takes onboard ram could do that, but you have a separate vid card. I dont know what else could do that?
But hey, if i get 3 yrs out of an install i figure i am doing well. Course i do use my puter about 8 hrs a day, 7 days a week, and thats a real 8 hrs, not just on and waiting! So i figure i do well at that.
If you use it all the time and got 5 yrs out of an install you are way ahead of the game!

If not, or even if you do, you might want to:
test your ram first, memtest can be googled, free.
Also there are a few progs around that will give you a list of all drivers you have installed on your pc, that could be helpful for a reformat.
Also, i take snapshots of all my install progs using printkey, shots of add\remove progs, and start menu, etc, program files, just so i can remember what i did have installed.

Could be ram, last time i had the card in it didn't do this but this time all the sudden the comp thinks it has 480mb of ram instead of 512. I suppose whatever is messing w/ the ram could be doing it to my games too.

If you have onboard video have you checked its disabled in the bios? Could be a conflict of drivers. Also i can thoroughly recommend using the nvidia and ATi driver removal tools to completley clean out your system and re-install the correct ones. You say you had loads of old adaptor drivers laying around. Especially if the onboard is nVidia and the PCI card is ATI

No, the onboard is something else, SIS i think. The nvidia card is an agp, and the ATI is the PCI one. It's kind of a moot point now considering that i'm getting a new card soon anyway but i'd like to continue using the old one for other machines.

I'm sure this is already recognized, but for what it's worth. I'm not aware, with one exception, of any catalyst drivers which deal with sound. The exception is when the card has a TV tuner. In that case, it simply extracts the audio from the TV signal, and sends it to the sound card. Thus, looking for sound problems in catalyst drivers seems futile.
