Dell 6300 servers are probably the worst design rack mount I have ever seen. 2 of us took about 1-1.5 hours to rack 1 server, where a Compaq or HP server only takes us 20-30 minutes.
Ron Valkenburg
ronald.valkenburg@ey.com
<a href= & Young Home Page
What were the problems that you ran into. I am going to be racking one of these soon. What kind of Rack was it? Was it Dell, Compaq, APEX?
Any input would be great....

oneworld@goes.com

The problem is mostly just poor design. This is specific to the 6300. On most servers you will find 1 rail on each side of the server, on the 6300 you have 3. Tring to line up 3 rails on each side is extremly aggrivating. Also the rails that are in the rack are ajustable, which you can never find the correct length, they move as the server rolls in and out.
The rack is a standard Compaq rack, which this is also an issue since now we can not use the front door because the Dell 6300 server face sticks out to far.
We had no choice but to take this machine, otherwise we would never buy a Dell server.
Ron Valkenburg
ronald.valkenburg@ey.com
<a href= & Young Home Page
Thanks for the info. I did notice the three rail design. Other then the three rail design was there any other problems placing it into the compaq rack? That is what I am going to be doing.

oneworld@goes.com

I just installed a Dell Rack with 2450, 2300, 2400, 4300, 6300. I noticed that the racking for the 43xx and 63xx are the same but there are different models. The ones with the three rails are almost impossible to get in. I had to break off the metal piece on the inside of the front rails for easy entry. The other versions are so much easier. All the 2450s and some 43xx/63xx are installed by installed 3 bolts on the side of the server and just sliding them into the rack. This takes 15 minutes. I don't know which model is more current. I ordered everything at the same time and got different racking models. 24xx/25xx are only 1 rail, no problem.
