How stupid is that? Clearly Windows knows which program is accessing the device, an external hard drive, but it won't tell me. I have closed everything I can think of after copying a small directory from the external drive to the desktop. There seems to be no indication that the write is not complete.

How do I flush any write cache, or find out what's pending?

Hi, Mike.

Resource Monitor's Disk tab should help pin down the process, I usually fire it up from TaskMan's Performance tab or via Run: ResMon.
