"Verify using CRC" performance problem

Does anyone have suggestions for improving the performance of a Verify using a scan with CRC? I'm getting anywhere from 108 to 120 MB/m on the verify & with 50G of data to verify it's rather unpleasant to say the least.

The hardware is a Dell Poweredge 1650 w/ 1G of ram (approx 500MB of which is free), a nice Raid5, & the tape is a Powervault 122T DLT.
