I'm a tutor teaching IT, and several of our students have encountered this problem:

When we try to "Open" in front page, we get the message "Unable to open web" (no dialogue box, just the error).

When we try to "Open web", again no dialogue, but the following error;

"Unable to open web. Possible causes:
1.The web server may not have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
2.The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3.If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect.
4.An error occurred in the web server.
5.Opening a web using ftp:// is not allowed."

We are trying to open files / webs on a local machine, not a server.
FrontPage brings up these errors as soon as the menu option is selected, we never get a chance to even select a location to open.

It seems to me (I'm NO FrontPage expert) that some option has been selected to cause frontpage to look for a default location which it cannot access?

Please help, my job is on the line (not really, but please help anyway)

thanks

Hi,

If you search on Microsoft's support site there are many articles that address to your problem, You don't have to go through all of them, out of the top 10 I could already see some that might help you solve the problem you are having...why not take a look at them at

Maybe you should try "close web" than close your frontpage program than restart it than open web again.

Or

Have you tried creating a brand new web and try opening it? If you could open it successfully than just copy your original/old web files to the new web.

Thank's for that, I'd already tried Microsoft support, but those articles don't address our problem;

We can't open anything. Selecting the menu options for open / open web simply spawns an error message, no open dialogue, so it is no as if we are trying to open a file we have no access to or anyhting like that. If we create a new web we still are not able to open that.

I have known it happen many times where a student will save to, say, a network drive and then cannot open their files subsequently when the drive is not available. That is not what is happening here, FrontPage simply will not allow us to get to an open dialogue.

If you can get FrontPage to open, then go to Tools>Options, and on the general tab make sure there is not a checkmark in front of "open last web automatically when FrontPage opens"

If there is a checkmark there, remove it. Close FrontPage, then open it again, then File>Open Web and browse to the location of the web you want to install.

It sounds like FrontPage is trying to automatically open a web that is no longer in the location where it is looking.

That's the beauty!

I'd been searching through microsoft and google for days with no joy, that article looks like it will solve the problem, or at least the workaround will help

Much obliged
