I run IE5.5 SP1 (with all patches) on Windows 2000 SP1 (with the latest applicable patches but not SP2).

(Recently), I noticed that IE5.5 crashes in the following ways
1) Open a web site,
2) Momentarily, it display some HTML tags (first few tags) from the site, and then crashes, saying something like " IEXPLORE.exe : An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated."

Regrettably, I can't tell you how 'repeatable' this error is nor could I tell you how I come about getting this error. It just occurs around daily, but on different sort of sites.

I have also been getting the following error recently:
1.1) "The page cannot be displayed....Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer ", error in browsing a site, which Netscape 4.77 could hapily display at the same time with the same connection.
1.2) 1.1 appears to be 'improved' by explicitly entering my ISP's DNS Servers' IP address under the ISP's Dial Up Networking entry. (Note that I also have a Network Card installed, solely for connection to another PC using cross over CAT-5 cable. The cable is disconnected at the time of error, and there are no DNS entries for the Network Card. Internet access is only gained through DUN)

If anyone needs to know, I am running a Dell Dimension 933MHz with a UK 56K V.90 Modem and UK Keyboard settings. But I guess these doesn't matter?

Anyway, could anyone tell me where I could look at the error log for IE5.5?? I tried Start Menu->Program->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer->Application Logs but I can't find any IE errors anywhere!! I tried searching for *.log in IE's directory, but no luck either. Is there still Dr Watson's log in Win2K?? If so, where is that? I guess the log might be useful for diagnostic purposes!

Btw, I have looked at Microsoft Knowledge Base, but they don't appear to have documents on this kind of error. aren't I unlucky?

when you updated 5.5 did you go back into internet options and the advanced tab to enable/disable features? I have customers who don't and then experience atypical errors such as yours. the usual culprit has been disabled java. the culprit in any case points to a plugin not launching correctly. Once, we changed the customer's odd default font settings and resolved their issues similiar to yours. hope this helps. My application log under explorer dumps into the internet explorer folder within programs directory. It is not unexpected to not get a log if the error is not being trapped.

witness,
Thanks,

I have not expliclity disabled Java prior to upgrade to IE5.5. It was left enabled. Is this normal or not?

Also, could you clarify what do you mean by your resolution (i.e. what font to change to to solve a plugin related problem??) Do I not need to re-install anything?

If I do need to re-install? Is it recommended to uninstall first before re-installing?

Also, I could not find any log files under the Program Files\Internet Explorer !! Nor is there anything logged under Event Viewer->Application log, even though when IE crash, a dialog pops up saying "...error log is being generated...". The error appears to have been trapped, since if I want to do an "end task" whilst the error dialog is showing, another dialog would pop up saying I have to wait till debugging fininsh?? Note, I don't have Visual Studio or any debugging programs installed... but still befuddled to look for the error logs!

Btw, did u say the your customers got the DNS or the IE crashing problem?

Hi drkestrel,
Can you please let me know, how you solved the problem. As i have similar annoying experience with IE 5.5 on win2k professional. Interestingly I could open the MSN Messenger and chat but when ever tries to browse the web, windows pops with an error, or "The page cannot be displayed....Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer ".
Btw: Did default font settings options worked if so how?

I don't think it has got anything to do with Fonts.

I SUSPECT it might have something to do with how IE interprets the response from the web server. E.g. If the header has got 404 Error, it display such page. Why it is doing it when the remote web server is working, you tell me if you know. This is not even listed under Microsoft Knowledge Base!

My users (as well as myself and my manager) are having the same error and log generation. We also are on W2K-SP1, but we have IE5.5 SP2 installed. I have been whatching this error and darned if I can get any pattern to it. Anybody that has some solutions that would be great.

Try these links:

Error Message: The Page Cannot Be Displayed

"Page Cannot be Displayed" or "Timeout" Error Messages When Browsing the Internet

What to Do When You Receive "The Page Cannot be Found" Error Message in Your Browser

If you're running IIS:
Error Message: The Page Cannot Be Displayed . . . Cannot Find Server or DNS Error

PRB: Error "Page Cannot Be Displayed" When You Connect Through HTTPS
