I have a couple of users that cannot receive emails on a regular basis. The senders are getting the message "Recipient was unavailable to take message." The only refernce I found to this message was on the internet, and it was in reference to mailboxes that were over 15mb in size. I know that this is not the case. Has anyone heard of this error? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

OK, so after asking some more questions of the accounts involved in this issue, I have updated information. Hopefully the new info rings a bell to someone.
While in the office, the users are attempting to send emails to their AOL accounts. The message sent back to their Inbox (Exchange server) reads:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Test
Sent: 7/1/02 8:32 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'xxx@aol.com' on 7/1/02 8:32 AM
The recipient was unavailable to take delivery of the message
The MTS-ID of the original message is: &%#$....

I have spoken to AOL, and they claim this is not a domain that is being blocked.

Any ideas are welcome, thanks.

couple of things come to mind:

1)Do these accounts have any kind of message size/store limits?

2)Do these account have any kind of filtering on them? E.G. Maybe these users have "safe" lists of email addresses that they'll accept mail from...?

Could be possible that he AOL user has reached its size limit and can not accept any more mail. To test this you should try to send a test message from another network (I.E - Hotmail for example - To see if you get the same message)

We have also have an MS-Exchange Server 5.5. We are also unable to send to any AOL Users. I have also spoken with AOL Support they indicated that they installed some new spam filtering software. I have been dealing with this issue for about the same amount of time since end of June, 1st of July timeframe. I have been checking open relay sites and spam site and have fixed, I believe my open relay issues or spam problem.

Have you been able to send to AOL users again? If so, how did you fix your email send problem???

BT

Your site may not be blocked by AOL, but one of the relays that the message goes through, may be blocked.
Look for the last relay, in the returned e-mail. It should state which hop it is not accepting from. Then it is a matter of informing your Internet Provider, the one who is supporting your Internet mail, of this situation.

Later,

Ken Walters
