This message comes up and the printer won't print even though there is paper in the printer and the paper-guides are adjusted correctly. Called HP, they said to buy a new printer but this one is not that old and is used only occasoinally. Any ideas on how to correct this problem really appreciated.

Most HP sensors are optical. Look at the "flapper" or similar lever device that contacts the top of the paper stack. The other end of it probably passes through a "U" shaped optical sensor (it's about the size of a dime). Take out the toner cartridge first! then and blow out the sensor with canned air, and try again. Also watch for bits of paper in the "U"; that can also cause a misread.

I agree with ajr3.

The "Flapper" (called a sensor flag) moves between an emitter/detector pair. If this pair is blocked by paper dust, dirt, or a scrap of paper, OR if the flag itself is broken or has popped out of the hinge guides, that will cause this error.

Worst case, the emitter/detector pair has blown (VERY rare) and would need to be replaced. This can be tested with a DVOM.

You should start a new topic.

But to answer your question; if it's USB, then install the disk FIRST before plugging in the printer.

Not surprised that HP would just say buy a new printer!
That was some tech support!
It is worth it to get an extended warranty on some units like this.
If the error was "empty output bin" then that sensor would be the issue. "Out of paper" would be the sensor underneath in the tray cavity. There are two. The front, right one has a spring that operates lifting/pressure of the rollers, and behind that is the paper sensor.
