I have this Hp Pavilion 6545c. When I boot up the computer's message is "operating system can not be found".
So I went in to the BIOS setup and found that it didn't list the hard drive as the Primary Master. But it did find the CD-Rom. I then switched the cables(CD and Hard drive)...the CD-Rom was discovered but not the hard drive...so it wasn't one of the controllers. Then I have another system at home. A gateway. I put the HP drive in the gate way and it booted up fine from the HP hard drive...(i disconnected the gateway drive). I backed up all information on a CD from the HP drive. Then I formated it...Ran the full blown Scan Disk and still...no luck. Didn't have any bad sectors...The HP system was running 98 if that helps. Its not mine so I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was SE.
Thanks for you help!

edfair,
I identified the problem. It was caused by a battery problem, it was empty, so when i get into the setup aand changed some paraùeters, when saving to the CMOS there was no enough energy outputed from the battery to memeorize information to the CMOS. So the computer doesn't recognize all its periferals any more. So to solve this problem i need first to replace the Batterry, second to obtain Boot Disk to redetect all of periferals.
I think that i found the information needed but i need a little help to get it. Can you see with me this page and tell me how to enter VECTRA ES Link:ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/servers/obsolete/

Should be able to do everything without a disk. Try using the [F2] key while booting up. I'll try to get to a Vectra to verify. Then you can get to the I/O pages to change the items. If I recall , [F2] then arrow across to get to the right page, down arrow to the subsection and enter to get to the details.
Most will kick you to setup when the new battery is installed since the date will have been set to default of 1980. Ed Fair

Thank you edfair i'm waiting for you to get a vectra and try something with me, really this vectra is obsolette as HP Technical Support told me.

Unfortunately , the Vecta I was going to use is in Florida now. I'll try another place next week.
That computer is only as obsolete as you want it to be. Would probably be a step up for several of mine. Ed Fair

WOW ... my HD is just like that, and it to is hooked to a Vectra as well, I wonder if there is a connection to that.

I am about ready to case the drive in plastic and send it to Quantum to have them look at it for prosperity, he he!

If I place it here on my system ( W2Kp ) I see it, can format it, use it all the time, but when I put it back over there it goes away again. It is seen from BIOS too, so I am just puzzled with the issue!

My case is a little bit different than yours, for me the problem is to enter the bios setup for this i need boot disk, so if you have it please upload it to me.

Boot Disk? To enter the BIOS you never get to the boot sequence but rather F2 a few times ( even before you see screen ) after you 'cold' turn on the computer. If you do not get to BIOS then, your BIOS is probably bad.

After you get to BIOS the F9 function resets the BIOS to defaults. Thers is also a RESET from the mother board on some systems. Jumper box toggle 6 set to CLOSED, turn on the power, off again, then set 6 back to OPEN should rests your BIOS CMOS settings. BUT read your board before trying that!

My HP vectra's model is so old that i can't enter the bios without boot disk if you read the old messages of this page you can find all specifications of the model. Best regards

I have a compaq 5000 series bout two years old. I am putting in a maxtor 40 gig harddrive. I can not seem to get the operating system to load. I think that the cd rom is not being recognized. I get a c prompt and an a prompt. i tried booting off of the floppy mbut then it just freezes at the pc bus line and doesn't go to the cd rom to load the operating system. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

You heed to have at least a Win98 setup disk to have the drivers load straight on the new system harddrive. It will prompt you to boot with CD ROM support.

98 SU disk contains the driver loader for your CD but not 95.

There is also an option to Boot from CD in the BIOS which if you have not changed things, you might be able to just have the recovery/restore disk in place before you turn the system on from completely off. Try that first! Recover to factory, then update to what you want it operating at.

You need to add more information for a better solution OK!

Like what OS are you tryig to install?
And from what type CD?
Are you trying to use the Compacq Recovery/Restore CD(s)?
Do you know how to format a partition on the new 40 GIG?
^ If so I highly recomend only doing 2 to 5 GIG because you will be a while waiting on 40 GIG!
