My user is using XP and has 20+ GB free disk space. But when unpacking msdex86.exe for installation the system complains "not enough disk space". Any idea what went wrong? Thanks!!!

is the user an administrator of his/her pc

the files may be unpacking into an area that the user has no rights to write to eg c:
try logging in as an administrator and repeat the process "Work to live, don't live to work"

"The problem with troubleshooting is that sometimes it shoots back"

Thanks immacola. The user was in admin account. Finally we decrease the paging file size and it works.

Is there a problem with the users Temp or Windows Temp files?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
