hello all,

I have an IP Office configured with 3 SIP trunks. The customer asked me for programming a button for his 1616, he wants to see if the lines are busy (turned the led on) but there is no line appearance option (like 701, 702 etc for analog lines).

what do I do now?

Tell him this is 2013...

Even with analog trunks I tell my customers that nowadays, everything is virtual and that they must deal with it. Plus, do you have 3 DIDs or 3 channels? Very different concepts.

It's better to have DSS buttons to see who is online rather then how many lines are buys IMO.

You don't, isn't going to happen. Due to the way SIP works versus analogue/ISDN channels, you are attempting to mix 1980's functioning with modern protocols and features. I don't know if Nortel, Mitel or Panasonic etc can do it... but not the IPO :)

This is because we are using now 3 GSM SIP gateways for cellphone calls, and they could view the old 3 analog lines as well before but now with more technology, they can't. its hard to explain that for them... :/

It's hard for me to explain how a Mobile/Cell works to my Nanna(Grandmother), but sometimes you need to persist :)

according to them, sometimes an user used to ask a cellphone call for the telephonist, the telephonist used to see the three lines busy and say immediatly to the user she would try it later, but now she has to try the call and get a "waiting for line" to give a fallback to that user.

We know how Line appearnce keys work.... Truth is they need more trunks/channels if they are always waiting for one to free up. That's the advantage of SIP, adding more channels is easy and cheaper than analogue :)

SIP and line appearances is impossible.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

You should take the phone system away from them before they get hurt.

Panasonic can do this... and there are valid scenarios I've heard for this functionality.

It would also be easy to implement for avaya. Create buttons that map to a sip line and channel.

Panasonic still make key systems so that's of no surprise, but if you want flexibility and features Panasonic isn't usually your first choice, depends what you want :)

Panasonic makes incredibly reliable, "carrier grade" products. Yes, you offset some coolness and features, but I can tell you that in all the years we've done Panasonic and Avaya, only once can I recall a software release from Panasonic that caused a problem.

Customer requirements/features should dictate the brand, not the other way around.

Indeed, I think my "depends what you want" covers that :)

I kinda have what you're asking for working. Problem is, either the lights turn off too soon (once the call is connected), or not at all. But its a really really hackey way of doing it with vmpro, phantom groups, and set/gets of service modes. It's so bad, I won't even post it.

If you build phantom extensions, add them in a linear hunt, then add bridged call appearances on the user phone, this should more or less emulate what you are looking for.

Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

program the system correctly & cellphone calls will automatically try your GSM gateways (ARS means Automatic Route Selection, the clue is in the name) taking the load of the receptionist so she can do her own job for a change.

depending on the requirements the call can either wait indefinitely (showing "Waiting for Line" on the handset) or fall back to the normal route.

The PABX has moved on & the customer need to be brought out of the 19th centruy

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

But i'm so happy with my old system, I have full control...
