f2 looks ok
F1 starts pc ok
have changed ide cables around
checked jumpers ok

same messg

any thoughts???
thanks

And changed CMOS? Hate to ask a stupid question, but sometimes I must.
Or auto detect?
Changing jumpers can get you into trouble.
How about a more correct description of what you have, cables and jumper connections?

Old Dell optiplex gl5100 original hard drive .850
newer hard drive 6 gig
F2 detects hard drive as master andcd-rom detected as slave 1
ide cable from hard drive goes to ide 1 connector
ide cable from cd-rom goes to ide2 connector
I have flashed the bios( i think correctely)
removed battry for 5 mins, reset defaults
still same messg
ok??

IDE cable 40 wire or 80 wire?
For test purpose I would pull both original HD and CD and see if it would detect the new as master on primary channel.
That at least will let you know that the drive can be seen. Then would work at getting things to ID correctly. And maybe take everything to cable select. Masters on the end.

Tried as advised still get same messg
DELL advised me that gl-optiplex will only recognise 2 gig hard drive
so I assume that must be the problem
thanks anyway for advise

Well, it won't be the mobo limiting to a 2GB HD but rather the BIOS - try updating that one!

Peace,

Yellow
