Before reformatting my computer, I saved all my files on to a CDR. Then copied them back on to my HDD when all was done. Most of the files I can still access from both the HDD and the CDR, but there is one file that gives me the following error message :

"file" cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read only location or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

I have sent the file in question to other computers and tried to open it with the same error message coming up each time. I am not using a server or is the file read only. Is it corrupt and if so, can I retrieve it? Anyone help me out here?

Your program obviously requires a file that is not Read-only.

When you copy a file from a CD it is copied with the attributes it has on the CD. In this case the main one is that all CD files are Read-only. To change the status after you have copied it to your hard disk right click on the file in MS Explorer and select Properties from the pop up menu. At the bottom of the Properties dialog you will see the Read-only check box is ticked. Un-check the box and the file will now be Read-write and you will probably be able to use it.

Sorry I did not realise I had not mentioned the type of file. It is an excel file.

The read only box is not checked. Most of the other excel files that I transfered over still work okay.

This file I mentioned is the only one that will not open and gives me that error message. It is quite a big file, if that has anything to do with it.

The other files I am having prblems with are also excel files but in these cases the file opens up but look nothing like they were. There is one big formula with this type of lettering ( ùùùùùùùûûûúúúøøøøøøùùùûùùú÷ù ) in it.

Sorry for the late reply. To any that read this, I contacted Anne and she has recovered this unsing Excel XP, as she stated. Thanks Anne, real help there.
