"File error: data may have been lost" in Excel 2

I don't know if this is a excel or crystal reports (reporting tool) problem so I thought I would post to both forums:

I'm exporting to excel (2003 with service package 3) from Crystal Reports 8.

Whenever I export now to excel from crystal, I'm getting the following error message when I try to open it up in Excel "File error: data may have been lost." The file does open and as far as I can tell, no data has been lost. I'm not sure when this started since I give reports to users without opening them up in excel (no user has said they are having this problem but I suspect that they really don't read the error and just click ok).

I have another computer with Crystal Reports 9, using the excel version with same service package and it opens up fine with no error.

Any help is very appreciated.

It looks like crystal 8 was to blame (didn't like SP3) but luckily I found a service pack for crystal that corrected my problem.

Hi there... I seem to have this same problem and it also started when I installed the Office SP3. Where did you get the SP for crystal that fixed the problem?

Per a crystal forum user, I downloaded the most current "service package" and "database and export driver" (monthly hot fix) for Crystal version 8.5 (they didn't have any for version 8) from business objects website:

Version 8.5 service package at:

http://support.businessobjects.com/downloads/monthly_hot_fixes/crystalreports.asp

I did have a problem and I'm thinking that it was caused by the service package but I can't be sure. After I ran the updates then it opened up version 8.5, even though, I clicked on my version 8 icon (I don't have 8.5 on my machine so when I clicked on it then it wanted a code that I don't have). Luckily, I was able to find the executable for version 8 still on my machine.

I believe I am seeing this in our environment as well post SP3. However, the situation here is we still have Crystal 7.5. I don't know much about Crystal. Would those fixes listed above work for Crystal 7.5, too?

I'm sorry but I don't know if it will or not. I wasn't even sure it would work on version 8 but luckily, it did. You might want to join the Crystal Reports 4 Other topics forum and ask that question if you don't get an answer on this forum. Good Luck!

kernal: I recently started seeing the same problem from an application called Report2Web (which has a Crystal back end). I figured that it was a compatibility issue since the problem started after reinstalling Office 2003 (with SP3), but I haven't bothered trying to find the problem yet. Now I don't have to because I just stumbled upon your thread.

I just had this same issue. I fixed it by replacing the u2fxls.dll with by 8.6.2.515 version. The output looks better as well.

Also - some of the workstations had multiple copies of that DLL around.

Same problem with CR8.5.0.217 and Excel2003 SP3. Downloaded and installed CR8.5 SP3. No more error. Thanks!
