We trying to install SCO OpenServer 6.0
on IBM server
xSeries226 8488-E4Y with ServeRAID 6i controller.
Server is reported "Certified".

We use SCO OpenServer 6.0 CD from March.
HBA driver we get from IBM CD, enclosed to server.
This floppy media loads very good with 5.0.7 version.

But 6.0.0 reports "Error when mounting HBA media" and installation fails - unrecognized HBA etc.

Suppose there is difference in format of BTLD diskettes for 5.0.7 and 6.0.0

More information about this problem ?

Stankow,

You may search UnixWare drivers in the IBM CD.

Hope This Helps, PH.

I come to same conclusion. Then SCO guy call me (they are very kind, those SCO guys !) and propose the same. Because ot convergention between UnixWare and SCO OS 6.0, at least on kernel level, it is very likely. Although it is not enough to mention this important fact only in marketing materials. As the sad practise shows, it is important to emphasise this fact in technical notes also ! Going to try, stay on the frequency, will report the result, if any :)

Stankow,

I prepare a floppy from IBM support CD. Now SCO OS 6.0 do not reject the floppy disk. It silently accept it, but then the "ipsraid" driver do not appear in the list of HBA controllers, as do OS 5.0.7. And of course the the ServeRAID 6i is not detected.

It is not clear how to enter boot: line options. If we use UnixWare driver maybe we have to enter according UnixWare syntax. But we load OS 6.0 !?! Which syntax to follow ?

[boot] is new, and there is mysterios hidden VT0> prompt, I never meet before, using OpenServer since ODT 1.0, 1991.

There is a real mess of old useless readme.txt and ibm.com and sco.com links and strange pdf pointing each on other ! No one says something reasonable.

No guys, this is not the way ! IBM-SCO war is not our war, do not involve us in it.

Stankow,

Dear Stankow,
I am struggling with the same problem as you are. I am sure you had read my post earlier. I can not even load
SCO 5.07 sucessfully. Please out line for me the steps you
had used for SCO 5.07 installation and which driver did you
use for 6i Raid card. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Dear eyedoc1975, I found 3 problems:

1. It is not clearly stated, that OSR6 uses WnixWare drivers (who can guess it !?)
2. During IPL OSR6 do not enough clearly announce that it not found (or found) proper driver.
3. Drivers are too hidden. By example 36 kb driver was hidden in 1,44 MB image, packeted in 470 MB CD image ! Moreover this image could be downloaded only by IBM applet, so one could not use download resume and if the link drops (3 times) you can finish like me with 980 MB downloaded to obtain 36 kb of usefull info ! :(

Good news - I succeed to install 5.0.7 and OSR6 on IBM xSeries226 8488-E4Y, both on "planar" SCSI kontroller and ServeRAID 6i controller - total 4 combinations.

To install OSR6:
1. download IBM ServeRAID Support CD from
Name is 32r2741.iso size is 481,689,600 B

Download could be only from IBM applet, not by FTP client :(
Version is 7.12. With server you get version 7.10 of the disk

2. Prepare FD from image: use XX:\diskette\scsi\unixware.img

DO NOT MISS with XX:\diskette\scsi\openserv.img or XX:\openserv\scsi\driver\VOL.000.000 or XX:\unixware\scsi\driver\ips.ds, as a normal user with not perverted mind (like some developers) could think.

The mistake could cost you a week (like me).

3. Use usual # dd if=unixware.img of=/dev/rfd0 to prepare FD. Check the file inixware.img. It could easily open it even with vi editor - the start lines are readable. There should be version 7.12 and other UnixWare attributes.

4. Start the IPL of OSR6. When ask "Load additional HBA drivers" press "space" to answer "Yes". Look the FD - it should flash, there should be message "Loading ips driver". If not clearly stated message the FD image is wrong !!

5. Next stage of IPL shows a list ot drivers. IPS driver should be there !! If not - look for mistake.

6. Proceed with IPL....

For "planar" controller - remove the additional plate ServeRAID and enable the planar SCSI controller from BIOS.

Best Regards

Stankow,

Add to previous post: - there is no noeed of any "boot:" options to load OSR6 on ServeRAID whith BTLD

Regards,

Stankow,

Dear Stankow
Thank you for your help. I was able to load OpenServer
6.0 on to an IBM X-226 server with a single 3.0MHz Xeon,
6i Raid card after installing ips driver as you had suggested. It however failed to load OpenSeerver 5.07. I am
not sure why. SCO office here was not at all helpful to me
as opposed to your experience. No wonder this company is
going down the tube.

hi, eyedoc1975,

I'm really happy I was helpfull.
To load 5.0.7 you have to prepare FD using another file, think XX:\diskette\scsi\openserv.img
I check it, it works, 5.0.7 load it. The file is on IBM CD, packeted with server.
Also could be find on IBM site, but one have to dig a lot :)
Rule is - for OSR 6.0 look for unixware driver, for OSR 5.0.7 look for "openserver" driver.
We never use SCO office, we use SCO as a platform for GPS system, written in Java. And SCO works well, stable.
But already 2 months we can not port it to 6.0 :( :(
OSR6.0 is very, very, unacceptable different :(

best regards !
