Friends - I administratively closed a FMP 5.5 file on the server, removed it to my desktop, modified it, and put it back on the server. When I try to administratively open the file I receive error message "Error Occurred;unable to open file".

FilmMaker says the resolution of this issue is; :The cloned database must be opened at least one time in FileMaker Pro to set the necessary attributes".

I assumed that opening the file on my desktop would do the trick. However, I'm getting the same error message? The only solution I've found is to reboot the server. My modified files come up as 'open', then. Must be a better way?

Help appreciated - Bob

insted of reboot...try re-starting the FMserver
but, are u saying that this happens on regualr basis or was it a 1 time incident?
if it happend more than ones then u might want to try using a Recovery of the file...it could be demaged or damaged enough to keep being droped....
All the best!

Simply uploading the file back to the server's folder isn't sufficient. You need to have the FMPS application (not the FMP application) "serve" the file before you can open it.

Whonnoci - My steps are;
- Log on as administrator
- Administratively 'close' the file
- Move the file to my desktop & modify the file
- Upload the file to the server
- Log on as administrator
- Attempt to change the 'served' condition from 'closed' to 'open'

That's when I get the error "Error Occurred;unable to open file".

If this process is incorrect, how do I have the server 'serve' the file. Your help is appreciated - Thanks, Bob

Bob - I'm on the road right now so I can't check this out (and as it has been a couple of years since I used the FMPS DOS commands so my memory is a little fuzzy). However, if you open a DOS window, go to the folder in which the fmpserver.exe file is located and type the DOS command fmpserver open *.* do you still get the error message? If so, prior to replacing the file on the network did you check to see if FMP changed the share flag from multi user to single user (sometimes it does that on its own when you're off the network and working on a file!) I always install a copy of the FMP application on the server and make changes to files using that app rather than those on my desktop/laptop as it is not unusual for FMP to do some wierd things otherwise.
