Okay, I'm not in the business. I work for a church and I'm the guy that is now in charge of the phone system. I'm a bit computer network savy, so I can understand about 40% of what you guys say.

I got an old Nortel 8x24 DB5 running with a Voice Gate 4000 DOS machine (I hate the Voice Gate system by the way). After my installer refused to give me the password, I found out how to re-set it on my own with this forum (I'm looking for a new Nortel distributor/dealer by the way).

As a result of reading the postings, I realized I could use music on hold/music background by simply running a feed to the 25th pair (violet/slate)of wires.

1. I counted down the block and the 25th pair of the left side is violet/slate.

2. I tried it with an old radio where I simply bypassed the speaker wires and fed them to the two lines - but no luck.

3. I know I got the Nortel system turned on both music on hold and background music features are turned on.

Any ideas why I'm not hearing anything? I tried switching both wires, so I don't think it's a polarity thing. Is my radio simply not powerful enough?

Many thanks in advance,
Gene.

Double check your progrming in the sysytem and if you have a butt set monitor output from radio, to verify you are getting output. Good Luck!!

executone,

Thanks for the response. I did try the slate/violet violet/slate pair on the block. It happened to be the very last pair on the left side of the block (I believe the 25th pair from the top). I am assuming that this is the correct location of it.

A couple of questions:

1. Can you or someone else explain what a butt set monitor is? Do I need some special amplifier to pump in the music? Can't I just use an old raido, cut the speaker on the radio and try these two wires? (This is just to test it.)

2. Also, would it be unwise to test some of the other free pairs on the block, even though they aren't slate/violet violet/slate? What are all these pairs of wires on the left side for anyway?

Thanks again,
glpier.

Did you punch down on right side of block and did you put bridge clips in?

1. A Butt set is a telephone that is portable that telephone technicians carry. They are not cheap, so if this is a one time deal you do not need it. I would not just hook it to a spaeker output the inpedunce would be to high. Iy is recomended to hookup to the earphone jack of audio device.
2. The other wires are used for other equipment.

phdude,

No. I "punched down" on the left side. The way this block is set up is the following: There are 25 pairs running down the left and 25 pairs running down the right. On the right, this is where all the extensions hook into. We have about a total of 10. (We have 4 lines coming in.) I've hooked up about 5 of these myself to M7310 phones.

On the left, all the terminals are empty, meaning there are no wires punched down on these at all. Except of course the last pair, the 25th pair where I've tried to hook up the radio.

I didn't put any bridge clips in. Please tell me what these are and why/how I need to install them.

Thanks again,
glpier.

stefanog65,

Please let me know how I can call you.

Thanks,
glpier.

Bridge clips are small pieces of metal that go on the 66 terminators to connect the right side of a 50 split block to the left side. The music source connects up on the station cable (same cable as phones) violet/Slate pair.
