[ponder]Could someone PLEASE help me out with this? We are running R5 on our server, and all clients..They were all upgraded from 4.6x....Now we can't get ANY outside mail coming in, because our ISP switched us over, and I was presented with a whole new block of IP addy's that I had to reconfigure for our network...I am ticked off that the switchover was done without giving me prior notice as is usually the customary procedure....

Before this switchover happened, we were running happily along, but now I have this incessant message rolling in the Domino server console window telling me that our "server is not found in the local domain"....I looked over at the IBM/Lotus support site, but the document over there only speaks to the 4.5-6x version, and while there are remnants of that still lurking in our system, I don't know how, or if it still speaks to our issue....

I also have to wonder if I should have just done a clean install, instead of an upgrade....We're running 5.08 now, and I also have issues with trying to upgrade databases that were created in 4.6x that I can't seem to replace the designs with....Please advise if you can....TIA...

Gzu* (who's about to go BALD tearing her hair out over this).....

Oh and btw, I contacted the people who host our website, and was told that our ISP had sent our MX records to them, (with again, no PRIOR NOTICE TO ME!) and our web host had to contact THEIR ns.*.* people and tell them to redirect our mail BACK to our Domino server, but as you know this takes about 24 hours or so to get it done...We can still send mail internally, and we can send outside...We just can't get any mail coming IN to us, from the outside world...

You should also know that I have our server set up NOT to accept relays either....We've had a problem with that, ("spoofing" and spam and all)and I put a stop to it before AND after I did the upgrade to our Domino server.....

I'm just not getting this and I don't understand why, all of a sudden...Did I miss something?

Hi,

The mail router in R5 works differently then in R4.
In R4 you had the MTA with many settings to configure and in R5 this is simplified.

In most cases you can just delete the R4 configuration: that means the connection documents that you created to get your mail out. So no foreing domain documents and things anymore.

In R5 you only need a configuration document, and enable the SMTP listener on your incoming mail servers.

Read the R5 administration help carefully. You will see that the setup is a lot more easy with R5.

The error message you get is probably coming from the old R4 configuration where you defined a foreign SMTP domain document to connect to the internet.

So: just delete all that old stuff, create a "Configuration document" and a global domain document and your e-mail is configured!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Dom!! I sorta, kinda figured that the old R4 configuration was still wreaking havoc within the new upgrade.....I tried everything you said, to no avail...

I wonder if I just need to tear it all down, and just start from scratch...Since we switched ISP's, I've had one client have a problem with caching the new IP for the server anyway, and I noticed that when I tried to do a fresh install of the R5 client, Win2k wouldn't ditch all of the old files from her R4 software....There's still something in the registry that I can't get rid of....I found a solution to that, however I don't know how to write an run the agent for it...

Anyway, as for our R5 server, it's so convoluted now, it won't even give me access to the doladmin DB, and other vital DB's I need to get into....The error with the doladmin DB keeps popping up everytime I try to change or delete something....So I do believe you are correct in that there's a whole lotta stuff goin on with the old R4 configuration that's still hanging around...

Therefore, it is my opinion that upgrades as they go, just majorly suck....Hugely....

Now, I think I just may have to do this all over from scratch..All of this was working just dandy before our ISP switched us over to another network with completely NEW IP addys...Nothing has worked since then, except access to our network drives....Drat...Thanks for your help though...You've clued me into something that I thought about awhile ago....

In the meantime the people who host our website, will set us up with email thru Outlook until I can get this resovled...Yee-fricken-haw....I'm just so over it right now, I don't know what to do at this point....I feel so "defeated"...Again, I had this all working before the IP addy and DNS IP change.....I just don't get where this all fell apart at....

But you know what? Over this past weekend, I did a tracert command on our mail server, and it timed out for a good 10-12 hops before it resolved itself....It's still doing the same thing today...But our web host tells me that our DNS nameservers can find our mail server....I did what you said and ditched the foreign domain document, but I still think there's a lotta other R4 configs that just don't belong in our new R5 setup...Problem is, I don't know where to go to find ALL of them.....I even created a new Configuration Document to no avail.....

Blah....I've had it for today....and I truly DO hate Mondays...Just like my friend Dilbert.....Heeee...

Hi,
Very simple: the R5 administration help has complete documentation on how to set up an R5 SMTP environment completely and also has documents that will show you the difference between the R4 configuration and the R5 configuration.

A change in Ip addresses should have no impact on your Domino servers since they should have an internal IP address behind a firewall. When the ISP updates the DNS records everything should work fine again after 2 days without the need to change anything.

It is very well possible therefore that your R4 configuration was not correct to begin with and that the update made it worse.

On the other hand if you can sent but not receive it is possible that the new DNS has not replicated around the internet enough for you to recieve e-mails. That means the system will work again after some days without the need for any modification.

Last tip: change ISP! An ISP that changes your IP addresses without notification is not a good choice!

Good luck!

Yep, I have to agree, and we've decided to just tear down the whole installation, and start from scratch...I've been looking at the R5 Help documentation you mentioned, and will be using it for the new fresh install...

And yes, we WILL be changing ISP's....They cost us a LOT of downtime when the conversion was done without prior notice...

Thanks again for your help!
