I have an SGI Octane - hardware should not be relevant, but oodles of ram, R10000 proc, the usual. I recently moved it from one dorm room to another, and it was configured with a static IP. I cannot use the same IP in the new room, but I can't even log in to change it. The graphical login windown appears with all the users, and not one of them may be used to log in... not even ROOT! It's as though the passwords are wrong, though they clearly are not.

So what do I do? Is this NIS gone wrong? Is it perhaps referencing itself by IP address for the purposes of logging users in? I have no CDROM drive or IRIX media, so I can't just wipe it... not to mention the abundance of files I'd like to get off there were I to have to resort to a the old wipe and reinstall.

Any leads at all would be appreciated.

So the system does not respond when clicking the login icon? There may be hanging processes/services because of missing network connection, then you need to wait a long time. Can you boot the system in single user mode and log in as root to change setup?
