Could anyone tell me how can I customize the IE "Cannot find server or DNS Error" error page. My problem is I don't know what the number of this error is so I can't use the custom errors in IIS nor the web.config file in ASP .NET.
Add all the Microsoft packages for customizing Help files.
Watch closely the left bottom of the screen.
You will then need to use at least the Resource Kit (or Resource Hacker tools from Third-Parties) and make certain with my first issue that the .html message is re-assembled without error and repackaged.
Thanks for replying but I don't know what you mean. Let me explain myself better: all I want to do is show a nice error message when my application is unavailable. "Sorry the system is under maintenance" or something like that. I noticed the error I get whe the application is down is this "Cannot find server or DNS Error". Some errors you can customize in IIS or the config file for ASP .NET, but you must know the error number for that. My question should be more on the lines of "what's the error number for this DNS error".
Now, what Microsoft packages are you talking about? Resource kit? Your first issue? Sorry, I don't get it ...
Thanks. I still can't find the error number for this error though. "The page can not be displayed ... Cannot find server or DNS error". I thought this was a HTTP error but can't find its number. It's not in that list you point me to. I know how to customize the error page but I need to know the error number.
I'm not so sure after all... Today at the office our proxy were down and I got that exact msg. Maybe it's an error msg generated on your local machine?
Perhaps I'm missing something here, Please excuse my ignorance. I understand that you can send customized error messages (forbidden, access denied etc) to a computer that has accessed your server. But isn't a DNS error a local problem on the computer and not the server? How can you send a customized error to a computer that can't resolve the DNS and has no access to your server?
On my computer that error page is displayed by IE from the shdoclc.dll (23)(dnserror.htm)and can be customized locally with a resource editor.
IE is spiting out this DNS error but is it really?
Under Internet Information Services I have several web sites. I want to shut down one of these sites and make the users see a customized error page. What they get now is this DNS error and all I want is to be able to say "come back later, maintenance taking place" or something. I believe the client actually reaches my server but because the site in the server is down no response is sent back to the client and IE comes up with the DNS error.
So lets forget about the DNS error, how do you set up a nice error page for when a site in IIS is down?
