hi,
i recently lost my bdc/backup server to a bad hd, after reinstalling nt 4.0 server and veritas bkpup exec 8.6 all of my servers were grayed out in the "backup selections" section. my pdc had listed "access denied" due to failure to authenticate name, after several resyncs this error stopped, however, my selections did not return to normal, also, i reinstalled the agents and ofo options remotely to the systems i am backing up, and still, grayed servers ... any help would be greatly appreciated ... º¿º

Hi

This looks like a licensing problem.

How many Remote agent licenses are showing in HELP, ABOUT in Backup Exec? In order to backup remote servers each server needs a remote agent installed and a license installed on the Backup Exec server.

Regards,

hi,
thanx for the read amak, there are 3 licenses showing, datacenter server, sql agent and ofo. could this still be a trust issue even though my pdc has allowed logon and sync, in my server manager, bdc has standard server icon and backup domain controller options, such as upgrade to primary (before bdc had same icon as pdc1), also, before the crash, all servers, like my citrix server (win2k server) and my pdc (winnt40 server) were viable options w/out any veritas components installed at all, now all servers on the network are grayed ... please help ... i desperately need my backup, uh, backup ... ☺☺

Like Amak said, how about the remote agent? Here's how I checked my system when I installed BE 8.6 and everything was grayed out.

I loaded BE without any licenses (Evaluation mode). This loads EVERYTHING. I checked to see if I could access everything.

I reinstalled BE without any licenses, but this time I deselected everything that I 'knew' I didn't need. Then I rechecked the access.

I kept doing this until I narrowed down what Options and licenses that I needed. Then I installed it again with the proper licenses.

It's a lot of work, but it can solve/eliminate the possibility of it being a licensing/option issue.

Hi Guys

You mentioned you only have 3 licenses. Datacenter server, sql agent and ofo. Theres your problem. There are no licenses for Remote agents. You need a license for each remote server that you want to protect. Otherwise it will stayed greayed out.

As SQLBILL stated you can try running in eval mode. This will provie that this is a licensing issue.

º¿º .......... errrrrr ..... I haven't felt this big of an idiot since the 70's, the BE was recently moved from one of our "clustered" servers (where the last IT guy had it set up) to one of our BDC's, at that time I did the demo install and everything worked ok, when the BDC's HD went bad we also had an issue with a log file growing out of control,(last IT guy named file oddly which made it hard to find) I called him by to show me his naming scheme and at that time he also re-installed our BE w/reg #'s ô¥ô .. and thus the grayed servers...thanx for your replies guys, you've been loads of help...
